Hey internet friends!
I sure didn't expect that post about the Art Institutes to generate so many strong opinions! Thank you all for your concerns and thoughtful comments, particularly those commending me for going back to school, whether or not the school itself was supported.
For me, right now, I think that is the main thing.
For me, it is a very big deal that I've decided to go back to school at all, the school itself is slightly arbitrary, chosen because it is biking distance from my home in Sacto. If I were still in the bay, I'd have a lot more options, and if it comes down to it, commuting is not out of the question because I actually love the train ride between the valley and the bay.
Basically, going into this, I was aware of some of Ai's reputation, if not necessarily many details. What I'm seeing in all of your comments typically reinforces what I believed going into it. I know it will have a lot more to do with how much work I put in than expecting teachers to do the hard part and forcing it down my throat.
Did you guys see the Red Cross Haiti Support posters? Those things were made into billboards and sent out across the country. Those were designed by a team of Ai graphic designers. For a class. And they got paid for it. The assignment wasn't just arbitrarily handed to them, either, they had to put together a proposal, work with budgets. And it's good work.
I don't know. I might get fed up with some aspect of it within a quarter or two, and seek out a different school. But I think it's worth a chance.
