First class today!

I will say the time was definitely used well. I was somewhat expecting a shortened class period and was pleasantly surprised. Typically at Ringling the first day of a class we'd go over the syllabus, talk about a supply list, and /maybe/ get a short lecture and/or homework assignment.

In the first hour of class, after briefly going around the room introducing ourselves as he kept a tally of people in each major, we
quickly went over the syllabus,
had a short lecture with many open-ended questions for participation,
were told to read 40+ pages from the ebook per class,
were told to bring in 15 examples of historical and contemporary type use next class,
were introduced to our first actual project.

This project requires
-extensive brainstorming
-30+ concept sketches
-12+ further development sketches of one concept
-Final Glyph form drawn in black ink on 8.5x11 vellum.
Due on Tuesday.

Upon finding out that no one in the class had much experience with vellum, Daniel laughed and (in my mind) did the Mr. Burns "Eeeexcellent", saying that we were in for a treat. The vellum is particularly susceptible to ink smudges and would require a high standard of craftsmanship. My inner ocd-self had a lot of glee at that one.

So already I'm seeing a requirement for quite a bit of home work. The next couple hours were spent starting to work on our concept sketches as Daniel came around and talked to each of us about what we were working on so far. They went by really fast!

My biggest problem so far is that my brain really really wants to illustrate it. I know I could do something fantastic, especially with as much brainstorming as I've already done! I'm even looking at all my sketches, and maybe only one or two actually break from being illustrative. He reminded us more than once that these are supposed to be abstract- giving the Glyph an emotional impact without necessarily having any parts that are strictly recognizable.

Maybe I'll let myself do an illustrative one if I ALSO do an abstract one.

This is fun.

In the last half hour of class we watched several kinetic typography videos- first with the sound off, with discussion, before watching them again with sound on.
V for Vendetta - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6Q0dfrbr10
Pirates of the Caribbean - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb2iRbtrSb4
Fight Club - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuiKJ0rRTAo

And here's a collection I just found while searching for those videos-
http://www.marcofolio.net/video/15_stunning_motion_typography_videos.html
I'll have to check that out, too.

-------------

TL;DR - If all classes are like this first one, I don't think I'm going to be disappointed with this school. I'm definitely already stretching my personal norms, and there's lots of suggested additional research and thought trails to follow.
